... and I had to have a favorite movie go down on the record, it would honestly have to be The Godfather or Apocalypse Now. I wanted to say Citizen Kane, and I like the literary lack of heavy-nadedness to the film, but I have to have a day completely open with absolutely nothing else to do before I'll watch the damned thing, whereas inclination will lead me more heavily towards the first two mentioned films. I liked Akiro Kurasawa's Ikiru, because it seemed the most tolerable of his films, and all these Star Wars folks kept saying Lucas was heavily influenced by Kurosawa. When I first heard the premise to Ikiru, I immediately wanted to do what so many Spaghetti Western writers did and filch the plot for an examination more sensitive to Western sensibilities, but the idea of that is a little disdainful despite Hollywood still grabbing Japanese ideas in the form of several horror films.
Miyamoto Musashi once defeated a younger swordsman with a boat paddle; I've always thought that with the right crew, with the right script, when pressed with a limitation of resources, a filmmaker who is truly good could make a great film from anything.
